Elijah Stapp’s Gravesite–Jackson County

Photos and comments of Anthony Buckalew:

Yes, these are my photographs of the white granite marker placed at Elijah Stapp’s grave, in 1936, the Centennial of the Republic.

The marker is in a grove of trees at [per Google Maps]29° 2′ 9.0″ N, 96° 42′ 26.8″ W. It is on private property. I could find no remnant of any period marker that might have been placed at the site when Elijah was interred in 1843, but there is a grave marker that remains, along with a small wrought-iron fence.

The gravesite is approximately five miles northwest of Edna, in Jackson County, on FM 822. After you pass CR123 to your right, about 3/4 mile further along, FM822 makes a slight right-hand bend. A white gravel drive is on your left in the trees, and just slightly offset is another gravel drive to your right. Turn left onto that private drive, and continue down the straight drive until it makes a bend to the left. Stop before you make the bend. As you sit there in that private driveway, two hundred feet from the bend is the grove of trees where Elijah Stapp’s grave lies.

If you miss the turn, and continue on FM822 and find yourself at CR124 on your right, you’ve gone too far! Go back 1/4 mile and find the driveway.

Here’s a Google Maps link.

And here’s a Google Maps preview.

I took these photos in 2006.

Respectfully submitted,
